摘要: In recent years, a truly impressive number of advances in genetics and genomics have greatly enhanced our understanding structural functional aspects plant genomes but at the same time challenged us with many compelling avenues investigation. The complete genome sequences Arabidopsis, rice, sorghum poplar as well an enormous expressed sequence tags (ESTs) become available. next few entire or least gene space will likely be sequenced for most major crops. However, improved varieties, not per se, contribute to economic return farmer. Functional systems biology research are facilitating identification networks that involved controlling genetic variation agronomically valuable traits elite breeding populations. Furthermore, combining new knowledge from genomic conventional methods is essential enhancing response selection, hence crop improvement. Superior varieties can result discovery novel variation, selection techniques, and/or genotypes attributes due superior combinations alleles multiple loci assembled through marker-assisted selection. Although it clear has great potential revolutionize discipline breeding, high costs invested in/associated currently limit implementation genomics-assisted improvement, especially inbreeding minor A critical assessment status availability resources model plants, devising strategies approaches effectively exploiting improvement been presented two volumes book. while Volume 1, entitled “Genomics platforms”, compiles chapters providing readers overview available tools, platforms, 2, applications improvement”, presents timely on An highlights these present introductory chapter.
