We analyzed the viability of Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) population North Park, Colorado, to evaluate its supposed decline due hunting pressure and habitat degradation. Demographic data from 23 years surveys were used parameterize a post-breeding, female-based projection matrix with three life stages: juveniles, yearlings, adults. The was found be approximately stable or in only if immigration apparent surveying errors factored set. Adult juvenile survival adult reproduction, respectively, identified as most limiting demographic factors. Empirical evidence designed experiments has shown that these factors respond markedly manipulations, especially brush manipulation. Several plausible management scenarios evaluated 100-year projections generated through Monte Carlo simulation (1000 iterations), sampling normal probability distribution entraining observed variability each parameter (95% confidence limits). Habitat manipulations achieve moderate levels (~15% canopy cover) sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) are recommended. Regression analyses power tests showed correspondence between mortality total for juveniles Provided improve adults, may conserved without reducing harvest by hunters.
