Comparison of a large and small-calibre tube drain for managing spontaneous pneumothoraces

摘要: To compare treatment success of large- and small-bore chest drains in the spontaneous pneumothoraces case-notes were reviewed those admitted to our hospital with a total 73 who treated by trainee doctors varying experience. Both intercostal tube drain system use during two-year period reviewed. Similar pneumothorax profile numbers both recorded, resulting similar time successful failed re-expansion pneumothoraces. Successful resolution was same for types negligible complications observed reflected previously reported experiences. However large-bore associated high complication rate (32%) more infectious (24%). The prone displacement (21%). There generally no evidence an increased failure morbidity, reflecting poorer expertise, non-specialist trainees managing A practical finding however that large where failed, tip had not been sited at apex pleural cavity irrespective type inserted.
