Ranking Locations for Japan's Manufacturing Multinationals in Asia: A Literature Survey Illustrated with Indexes*

摘要: This paper first reviews the voluminous, recent literature related to location choice by Japan's multinational corporations (MNCs) in Asian manufacturing. review suggests that host economy size, labor costs (defined include influences of productivity and quality) agglomeration Japanese investors were among most important factors influencing MNCs. However, evidence regarding a wide range other potential determinants was more mixed. Principles underlying are then illustrated constructing an index investment attractiveness from 140 components used measure influence 10 groups determinants, ranking 11 largest hosts manufacturing MNCs baseline 14 alternative scenarios. The four five scenarios prioritizing local or export markets reveal China be favorable location, usually followed Singapore Hong Kong. In nine with lower weights on domestic but higher for cost factors, Singapore, Kong China, attractive locations. At end scale, India, Vietnam Philippines ranked lowest scenarios, Indonesia slightly higher. Baseline rankings similar affiliate sales Philippines, diverged seven economies.
