摘要: This study examines motivations to quit smoking within the theoretical context of selftheories (Dweck, 2000). It investigates whether self-theories play a significant predictive role in motivating adults smoking. A convenience sample 197 adult current smokers and exsmokers northeast Ohio completed on line or paper versions Smoking Questionnaire, an instrument which included 6-item Fagerstrom Test Nicotine Dependence, 3items from Self-Theory Intelligence Self-Form for Adults, 23 items constructed by researcher. Descriptive analyses indicate that was 66% female, 77% white, 83% college educated, varied ages incomes. Stepwise logistic regression reveal 4 predictors cessation success: self-theory smoking, presence other household, annual household income, strength intention (motivation) stop Logistic also perceived helpfulness nicotine replacement therapy are statistically significantly Self-theory intelligence not predictor motivation behavior. Data selftheory independent domain specific this sample. research indicates as potent individuals has important implications program planners health educators many additional behavior change.
