摘要: Since first cutting my research teeth as a doctoral student on the subject of politics public celebrations (Jennings, 2004), I have been interested in nature relationship between opinion and behaviour elected government (see also Jennings, 2012). This chapter looks at problem interpreting dynamic data: Do politicians listen to demands making implementing their decisions? am questions not because think that responsiveness is intrinsically good thing but it seems me be core functioning democratic systems, well being central electoral survival government: where non-responsive or underperforming political parties candidates tend punished ballot box by public. In fact, case stimulated interest such question — Millennium Dome involved quite reverse. instance was struck puzzle why officials who were preoccupied with re-election (the poll-obsessed Blair government, no less), likely knowledgeable economic determinants vote choices public, would risk capital an unpopular white elephant Dome? There surely punishment for opting far more modest celebration new millennium.
