摘要: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and circumstances cervical haematomas complicating thyroid surgery. second objective effects modifying our unit's practice on complication. involved a retrospective chart review 504 consecutive operations performed by one surgeon from 1994 2005. were carried out in Professorial units Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery two teaching hospitals Dublin, Ireland. Indications for surgery included tumour 338(67%), airway compromise 60(12%) over-activity 106 (21%). 116(230/c) patients male 388(77%) females. Ages ranged 16 78 years mean age 34.6 years. 292 (58%) had vacuum drains inserted (eighth inch). 126(25%) single drain 86(17%) no used. 44 operated through small incision (4cms.) with help rigid endoscopes (Minimally invasive video assisted (MIVAT)). During period seven (1.4%) re-explored due development haematomas. None needed tracheostomy. Cervical developed 1.4 %/o surgeries which is consistent current literature. Predisposing factors like coagulation medications are common avoidable. Most develop within 6 hours Drains size do not appear change rate Strict protocols training care teams vital.
