摘要: Mechanical thinning is an important silviculture technique for timber production and reducing woody fuels in coniferous forest, but little known about its effect on wildlife mixed- forests the American Southwest. During 2005-2006 we examined diversity, abundance survival of terrestrial mammals thinned non-thinned mixed-coniferous forest Sacramento Mountains, Lincoln National Forest, southern New Mexico. The three treatments included two non-commercial thins with different slash (i.e., lop-pile, lop-scatter) a commercial harvest using selective logging. There were that differed age stand 20-30 years 60-100 post harvest). In general, had higher richness comparison older stand, did not differ from younger stand. Abundance North deermouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) among treatments. However, P. maniculatus varied more stands. Abundances gray-footed chipmunk (Tamias canipes) long-tailed vole (Microtus longicaudus) significantly lower than all Most large documented These results suggest stands are overly dense compared historical conditions benefit mammal community through increases diversity abundance. comparing mechanical-thinning evaluated, none provided clear cost or advantage to mammals. additional controlled experiments needed further corroborate these results.
