摘要: Abstract. The largest 7 Southeast Asian Studies (7SEAS) operations period within the Maritime Continent (MC) occurred in August–September 2012 biomass burning season. Data included were observations aboard M/Y Vasco, dispatched to Palawan Archipelago and Sulu Sea of Philippines for September 2012. At these locations, Vasco observed MC smoke pollution entering southwest monsoon (SWM) monsoonal trough. Here we describe research cruise findings finer-scale aerosol meteorology this convectively active region. This 2012 complemented a 2-week 2011 was generally consistent with previous terms how emission transport related flows, tropical cyclones (TC), covariance between events atmosphere's thermodynamic structure. Biomass plumes usually mixed significant amounts anthropogenic pollution. Also key behavior squall lines cold pools propagating across South China (SCS) scavenging particles their path. However, showed much higher modulation frequency than its counterpart. Whereas large synoptic-scale transported high concentrations into over days, measured exhibited shorter-term variation, sometimes only 3–12 h. Strong flow reversals also experienced 2012. Nucleation cleaner polluted conditions, as well urban plumes, observed. Perhaps most interestingly, several cases preceding major observed, opposed where largely scavenged from marine boundary layer. Combined, indicate pockets low particle counts that are not uncommon These perturbations difficult observe by satellite very model. Indeed, Navy Aerosol Analysis Prediction System (NAAPS) simulations captured longer quite but failed capture timing high-frequency phenomena. Ultimately, cruises demonstrate real world challenges satellite-based missions, life cycle questions such those future Aerosol/Clouds/Ecosystems (ACE) will investigate, importance small-scale phenomena sea breezes, lines, nucleation embedded SWM patterns dominating potential relationships clouds.
