This experiment examined the conditions under which children attribute their helpgiving behavior to external sources rather than a personal disposition help. Secondand third-grade earned pennies could be saved purchase prize or donated help needy peer. Children who received only social consequences (praise rebuke) no for donating attributed desire concern other child. In contrast, were given material (penny rewards fines not donating) together with more likely giving sources. Those informed of contingency offered most extrinsic attributions. remembered accurately consequences. Method training had effect on later during unconsequated test trials.
