Objective To identify risk factors associated with mother-to-child transmission of HIV in the Brazilian state Pernambuco. Methods Retrospective cohort study 1200 HIV-exposed children born Pernambuco, registered up to age 2 months a public programme prevent vertical transmission. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted for maternal peripartum characteristics prophylactic interventions, HIV. Results The rate was 9.16% (95% CI: 7.4–10.9). The following independently transmission: non-use antiretroviral during pregnancy (OR: 7.8; 95% 4.1–15); vaginal delivery 2.02; 1.2–3.4); prematurity 2.5; 1.3–4.7); breastfeeding 2.6; 1.4–4.6). Conclusions This is unacceptably high, as interventions such therapy infant feeding formula are free charge. Absence main factor. Therefore, early identification exposed mothers initiating challenges controlling transmission.
