摘要: Oligodendrocyte is a highly specialized glial cell type in the vertebrate central nervous system, which guarantees long-distance transmission of action potential by producing myelin sheath wrapping adjacent axons. Disrupted and oligodendrocytes are hallmarks some devastating neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, although their contribution to neurodegeneration given disease still controversial. However, accumulating evidence from clinical studies genetic animal models implicates oligodendrocyte dysfunction one major events processes initiation progression neurodegeneration. In this article, we will review recent progress understanding non-traditional function neuronal support protection independent its possible Oligodendrocytes play pivotal role neurodegenerative diseases among special emphasis system atrophy Alzheimer’s review.
