“Who doesn’t like dolphins?!” Neoliberalization, variegated environmentalities, and value alterations in a cross-national comparison of Irrawaddy dolphin conservation

摘要: Abstract Critical assessments of the conservation-capitalism relationship based on Foucault’s concept governmentality have generated notions environmental governance as forms ‘green’ or ‘environmentality.’ This paper contributes to environmentalities literature by demonstrating utility a variegated approach in understanding how process neoliberalization unfolds different conservation contexts influence subjectivities. In this cross-national comparison, I examine value shifts associated with projects from perspectives and experiences people most affected these projects. Using Fletcher’s (2010) typology, compare two approaches Irrawaddy dolphin conservation: one Myanmar focused community enrichment preservation traditional human-dolphin relationships; other Cambodia individual monetary wealth neoliberal economic development. argue that dominant governing rationalities each country influenced execution environmentality ways which it articulated types environmentality. then show unique articulations led starkly subjectivities reinforcing socioecological values while restructuring them align rationalities. do contrasting findings trace alteration dolphins relations. conclude suggesting foreground reciprocity relations may serve temper neoliberalism thus provide path toward alternative socioecologies sustainabilities.
