摘要: VERTEBRATE blood haemoglobins discharge protons on oxygenation. This is part of the Bohr effect1. Recent work2,3 has shown that in from a variety terrestrial mammals ranging size mouse to elephant smaller animal greater sensitivity its haemoglobin changes pH. Thus discharges only about 1.5 during oxygenation while 3.8. An approximate inverse linear relation exists between number discharged by and logarithm body-weight which comes : one additional proton corresponds decrease factor 300. The extrapolat this relationship weights large whales suggested might possess with either zero or small effect.
