摘要: Under the Convention on Biological Diversity, world’s governments set a goal of protecting 10% all ecological regions by 2010. We evaluated progress toward that for major terrestrial biomes, realms, and ecoregions. Total land area under any legal protection has increased from previous estimates to 12.9%, notable achievement, although only 5.8% strict biodiversity. For ranges 4% 25%, with six 14 biomes still below level. Geographic patterns have distinct bias, higher rates in New World realms than Old realms. Of ecoregions, half do not meet 2010 Target 76% less their strictly protected. Approximately 13% ecoregions no protected areas. Recent years seen an expansion network, average 0.13% global added per year. Most since 2003 though been Brazil, particularly Amazon. Without investments conservation, spread across ecosystems, world will likely miss target.
