摘要: Khambaty, Tasneem. M.S., Purdue University, December 2011. Is Periodontal Disease a Partial Mediator of the Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Cardiovascular Disease? Major Professor: Jesse C. Stewart. Epidemiological studies suggest that depression may be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although several possible mediators this association have been proposed, precise mechanisms are yet unknown. Accordingly, we examined periodontal as novel mediator depression-CVD association, given its separate links with both CVD. Data from National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS) were analyzed. Participants 3,346 individuals aged 25-74 years free CVD at baseline (53% female, 16% non-white). Depression was assessed by the, depressed mood subscale General Well-Being Schedule Based on Russell Index, (43%) defined presence four or more pockets identified licensed dentist during examination. The primary outcome incident (n=727, 22%), nonfatal fatal coronary artery cerebrovascular disease, follow-up period interviews death certificate records. All analyses adjusted demographic factors. Logistic regression revealed no between GWBS score (OR=1.05, 95% CI: 0.96-1.14,
