摘要: The east coast of Australia experiences one the world's largest annual humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) migration, with an estimated 14 000 individuals in 2010. However, increasing coastal development is accelerating environmental pressure on migrating marine megafauna. Consequently, solutions to better manage presence urbanised waters are required. We have developed a novel survey method that can be applied operating watch vessels, integrating tourism industry into research and ultimately management waters. Preliminary results from first season observation (May-November 2010) Gold Coast bay showed successful return over 500 included 286 behavioural state observations. data were analysed terms most commonly observed behaviours, movement, pod size composition. numbers mothers calves highest September October both resting feeding behaviours documented, indicating importance for these individuals. Our pilot study demonstrated benefits watch, boat-based collection outweigh its limitations when strategically deployed carefully analysed. This edition published 2013
