摘要: The medical records of the 29 patients under 18 years age with infective endocarditis (IE) seen over a 20-year period by our department were reviewed to provide an overview spectrum IE during infancy and childhood. None had previous cardiovascular surgery. mean at onset was 7 2 months; 3 (10%) onset. One patient early died following 4 months treatment various antibiotics. Three underwent urgent surgery, 17 healed elective All 20 who operated on survived. remaining 8 followed alone. Positive blood cultures obtained from 24 (83%) patients, streptococci still commonly found (38%). Ventricular septal defect (VSD) accounted for 66% underlying heart diseases rheumatic 14%. Vegetations detected in 12 (67%) observed echocardiography. Among these 1 VSD tricuspid valve replacement closure because worsening congestive failure due progressive regurgitation. Echocardiography identifies high risk IE, though presence vegetation echocardiography does not necessarily itself dictate surgical intervention.
