Nurses transforming the spousal caregiving experience : health as expanding consciousness and patients recovery at home following cardiac surgery

摘要: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to answer the following questions: What is life pattern manifested by individuals caring for spouses who have had coronary artery bypass surgery? are thematic expressions patterns among theoretical framework guiding was Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness. research method created by Newman facilitated understanding the individual participant’s experience, identification, similarities in across participants and potential for expansion consciousness. sample included ten women and two men whose were recovering at home cardiac surgery. These twelve spousal caregivers shared their stories and caregiving experience first two weeks at home discharge from hospital. There were various levels expansion consciousness for these caregivers. Looking six themes emerged data. First, disruption caregivers’ roles responsibilities impacts relationship between the spousal shifts patterns. Second, face coping challenges with changes in lifestyle response to illness. Third, Spousal caregivers experience vigilance an effort ease uncertainty the recovery process. Fourth, knowledge helps gain a sense control uncertainty. Fifth, mutuality within the partnership nurse caregiver relationship impacts transformation. Sixth, Spousal caregivers’ awareness gives meaning and offers a new perception on they left to live. Findings important implications for nursing theory, practice, research, education health care policy. adds empirical support Theory of Health Consciousness provides way examine spousal nurse-client relationship.
