摘要: Over 10 years ago, Benjamin Fain, a physicist now living in Tel Aviv, attempted to hold conference on Jewish culture Moscow, an effort that was foiled by the KGB. Many of participants were eventually able flee, most emigrating Israel. In this book, these distinguished scholars and others from around world present their personal professional views Soviet Union. The book explores wide range topics, including underground literature, religious revival rise national consciousness. Some writers claim refuseniks are not leaders Jews but rather isolated minority, with being assimilated, acculturated, uninterested fleeing. Other essayists look at ambivalent role traditionally played Union both allowing some forms cultural expression same time suppressing any efforts individual practice.
