摘要: ‘Charles Peirce was, and to a degree still is, an enigma’ (Smith 1966, 3). Appearing sometimes as idealist, at other times metaphysical realist, was empiricist critical of empiricism; empiricism that, Ernest Nagel said, so profound that ‘no account the development contemporary is adequate which neglects writings influence Charles Peirce’ (Nagel 1940, 69). And yet, despite his enigmatic tendencies, there no single figure in unfolding history American pragmatism doesn’t acknowledge or her debt Peirce’s incalculable philosophical achievements readily recognize him founding their dynamic, multi-faceted school. just diverse interests school thought now bears name ‘pragmatism,’ for like itself, work encompassed logic, science, phenomenology, but few myriad branches philosophy piqued boundless interests.
