摘要: A startling auditory stimulus delivered during preparation for execution of a ballistic movement in simple reaction time task experiment induces two effects: startle response and shortening (the StartReact effect). We investigated whether prepulse inhibition the is effective suppressing either one these effects motor preparation. Twelve healthy volunteers were presented with seven different experimental conditions random order: while at rest, subjects received low intensity electrical shock on middle finger left hand (Prep), loud (Start), or combination (PrepStart). While engaged visual task, they imperative signal (React), any combinations PrepReact, StartReact, PrepStartReact. recorded EMG activity from orbicularis oculi sternocleidomastoid muscles to assess response, wrist extensor time. The was markedly reduced when Prep 100 ms before Start regardless rest preparing reaction. Reaction shortened significantly trials respect React trials, percentage not which preceded inhibited response. fact that accompanied by modification effect indicates there are separate physiological mechanisms effects, an observation has implications further understanding processes underlying
