摘要: Background : Twelve-hour shifts have been illustrated in the literature as being a highly contentious shift pattern. However, it has also highlighted that there is distinct paucity of solely related to such pattern critical care areas, where high activity and requirement for multiple significant decision-making situations. It was therefore identified an area deserved further exploration. Aim : This study aimed elicit nurses’ perceptions working 12-h shifts. Methods : Fifty-four nurses from three areas within large local NHS teaching hospital currently completed self-administered questionnaire on their Following on, focus group interview conducted complement this attempt explore these perceptions. Results : From results questionnaire, patient care, job satisfaction, off duty family life achieved most positive responses, whereas communication, fatigue education negative. The explored issues with added comments work-shy staff, suggestions patterns, breaks staffing levels. Conclusions : Twelve-hour are suitable patterns nurses, patients management, provided they fundamentally well-managed.
