摘要: [1] During the 2011 stratospheric final warming (SFW), a large anticyclone rapidly encompassed pole, displacing polar vortex and establishing strong summer easterlies. Tracer Equivalent Latitude (TrEL) maps indicate low latitude air was transported by into vortex. MLS nitrous oxide anomalously high throughout following summer, confirming TrEL results. A 33-year (1979–2011) simulation at 850 K potential temperature reveals number of similar low-TrEL events, which are often, but not always, associated with Frozen-In Anticyclone (FrIAC) formation. The summertime values highly correlated zonal wind speed in stratosphere SFW, suggesting that post-SFW circulation favors trapping air. event, classified as large-scale FrIAC, unusual having lowest strongest easterly within past three decades.
