Studies that used comprehensive measures (self-reported and objective measures) relied samples from shelters hotels. However, more representative community-based studies self-reports ratings. We conducted first study to use both a sample (N = 529) (an interview, limited examination, blood testing). Shelter dwellers compared with persons sampled elsewhere were less likely have illegal drugs, been victimized, injured skin, elevated aspartate aminotransferase levels mean corpuscular volumes. Sixty-two percent observed high pressure unaware their condition. Sampling only shelter dwellers, relying reports illness adults, may mask underestimate existent problems are revealed techniques measures. ( JAMA . 1989;262:1973-1979)
