Family perspectives on end-of-life care experiences in nursing homes

摘要: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to expand knowledge regarding end-of-life care received in nursing homes through the use narrative interviews with family members close decedents. Design and Methods: We conducted follow-up qualitative 54 respondents who had participated an earlier national survey 1,578 informants. Interviews were taped transcribed then coded by a five-member, multidisciplinary team identify overarching themes. Results: Respondents report that needs dying patients are often insufficiently addressed health professionals. Their low expectations their experiences cause many become vigilant advocates. physicians ‘‘missing action,’’ they desire more better trained staff. They indicate regulations reinforce task-focused rather than person-centered add patient burden. Although hospice services reported enhance care, also late referrals occasional misunderstandings about role scope hospice. Implications: Sustained efforts on fronts needed improve homes. Policy recommendations suggested.
