The diagnosis of autism and Asperger syndrome: findings from a survey of 770 families

摘要: As part of a wider survey parents children with autistic spectrum disorders in the UK, diagnostic experiences 614 autism and 156 Asperger syndrome were compared. Although ages two groups very similar at time survey, given diagnosis had experienced significantly longer delays greater frustration obtaining than those child autism. In 'autism group' average age when was confirmed around 5.5 years; 'Asperger it 11 years. Parents generally aware problems their child's development by 18 months age; group concerns emerged later, 30 age. Initial worries both centred abnormal social but less likely to have noted communication problems. Stereotyped or repetitive behaviours not prominent early years either group. Despite inherent data collected postal many findings this study are supported other research. The practical implications delayed diagnosis, especially case more able discussed.
