摘要: Population declines may promote interspecific hybridization due to the shortage of conspecific mates (Hubb’s ‘desperation’ hypothesis), thus greatly increasing risk species extinction. Yet, confirming this process in wild has proved elusive. Here we combine camera-trapping and molecular surveys over seven years document demographic processes associated with introgressive between critically endangered giant sable antelope (Hippotragus niger variani), naturally sympatric roan (H. equinus). Hybrids intermediate phenotypes, including backcrosses roan, were confirmed one two remnant populations. Hybridization followed population depletion both severe wartime poaching. In absence mature males, a mixed herd females hybrids formed grew progressively time. To prevent further recover small population, all confined large enclosure, which sables from other translocated. Given scale many animal populations, introgression scarcity be an cause biodiversity conservation concern. these circumstances, early detection should priority management
