摘要: Floods are the most important disaster among natural hazards. They account for about 30% of disasters by number, economic damage and 20% fatalities. Each year between 1975 2001 there were some 100 significant floods. On average they caused 11.000 fatalities affected 150 million people. Dams reservoirs play an role in flood mitigation within framework Integrated Flood Management. very effective structural measure because can store large volumes, modifying routing significantly reducing peak flows. often reduce frequency severity recurrent floods but, as case other alternatives, any tendency to create a perception total security should be avoided -although safety will undoubtedly greater due their routing. In management flood-mitigation dams development downstream flood-plains must carefully planned controlled.
