摘要: This paper summarises recent studies on bones from Novgorod The Great, and the nearby settlement of Ryurik Gorodishche, in north-west Russia. Bird are fre- quently collected along with mammal bones. Preliminary findings have indicated that ducks chickens were most common birds utilized, latter possibly growing importance later levels. Situated where river Volkov flows north out Lake Ilmen, wetland environment is reflected high number water- fowl assemblages. Other species include game-birds, raptors, corvids. There some indication hawking perhaps captive wild birds. Wet-sieving trials re- vealed bird under represented there also bias favour larger elements. Detailed analysis Gorodishche showed a similar, although less diverse, representation to main town. Analysis includes collection metrical, anatomical, butchery data it intended this preliminary work should form basis more detailed analyses, including intra-site diachronic comparisons, both at region as whole.
