摘要: The timbres of string and woodwind families were investigated by measuring sharpness loudness over a 2‐octave range between individual performers. Sharpness is defined as frequency‐dependent weighting the loudness‐critical band rate pattern. It promising for timbre perception research because it addresses most salient timbral dimension. Digital recordings collected with performers 4 m from microphone in music rehearsal hall. Performers played diatonic scales at two extreme musical dynamic levels, pianissimo fortissimo. Across all families, increases playing frequencies level, lies 0.5–2.0 acums. Loudness variance larger than variance. Overlap greatest levels exception double reeds. family smoothly changes across entire both dynamics levels. clarinet has less overlap fortissimo level slight increase lower pitches. Double reeds exhibit sharpness. Performer‐specific variations are evident, but general trends remain same.
