摘要: Social epidemiology, although rooted in social justice and studies of health disparities, has not yet articulated a set core values. We argue that recognizing such values is important when research inherently value-laden that, circumstances, establishing an evidence base for policy will be insufficient to bring about change. Theories ethics, including deontological consequentialism, rights theory, virtue communitarianism the capability approach can inform how consider valuation within research. use two illustrative examples, from harm reduction obesity research, indicate underlie multiple aspects process. Since values-based requires moving beyond positivist conceptions science, sciences, particularly critical theory sociological models public intellectuals, offer developing value-based epidemiology critical, engaged relevant.
