摘要: The main diagnostic character of polyconitid rudists is a distinctive ectomyophoral cavity inserted behind reflexed posterior myophoral plate in the left valve. only pre-Aptian Old World taxon recognized current literature Horiopleura dumortieri (Matheron): this species clearly shows prominent shelf right valve that genus, which continues into Albian. Polyconites, by contrast, has more depressed (operculiform) and its adductor was on an inward-sloping swelling inner wall, with no projecting shelf. Hitherto, earliest known Polyconites P. verneuili (Coquand), ranging from Middle Aptian (Gargasian). However, smaller specimens (of similar size to H. dumortieri) uppermost Lower (Dufrenoyia furcata zone) Maestrat Basin eastern Spain, together though slightly older southern Lusitanian Portugal show relatively configuration genus we refer them as new species, hadriani. Its similarity suggests direct chronospecific descent latter, phyletic increase, seen many other rudist lineages. Recognition inception lineage mid- resolves status certain polyconitids previously assigned baylei but problematical. Moreover, suggest (Coquand) may be synonymous. progressive depression (free) extension (fixed) ventral margin during development hadriani allowed upward growth-projection compressed margins. This mode growth, relative antecedent Horiopleura, permitted imbricate close-packing individuals, living flat oysters epibyssate pteriaceans such Isognomon, well mid-Cretaceous Chondrodonta.
