摘要: j Abstract Background: There is a scarcity of dataregarding the actual stigma and discriminationexperienced by schizophrenic patients their rel-atives. Those experiences can vary significantlydepending on specific social group involved. Wehave explored such phenomena in our culture with aqualitative technique. Methods: We developed study focus groups clinically stableschizophrenic outpatients (N = 18) relatives(N 26). Three were performed eachsample. Results: Six categories dis-crimination extracted from pa-tients’ data: Mental illness vs. Lack will, Prejudicerelated to dangerousness, Over-protection-infantili-zation, Daily discrimination, Discrimination inhealth care, Descendants, Avoidance-social isolation.Data relatives divided into three sets: towards witnessed rela-tives, discrimination suffered relativesthemselves exerted relativeson patients. Conclusions: Patients relativesdescribe great variety discriminationexperiences all areas life, including health care.Isolation avoidance are common reactions tothose experiences. Publicizing these could help reduce stig-matizing attitudes society result healthierreactions patients, favoring better course ofthe illness.j Key words schizophrenia – discrimina-tion qualitative research
