Development of Staff Cultural Capacity in an Intensive Environmental Stewardship Program for Urban Youth

摘要: Cultural competence training for environmental educators has typically focused on formal professional development activities. The current research examined how can develop cultural through interaction with youth in stewardship programs. An online survey was conducted staff working closely Nature Conservancy’s Leaders Environmental Action the Future program, to study their learning experiences. Responses were available from 34 (completion rate = 51%). Open-ended responses revealed they had learned about differences urban and groups’ engagement environment compared that of adults rural areas. In contrast, understanding different racial ethnic groups already high, not been impacted meaningfully. Quantitative items indicated multiple conservation viewpoints (M 4.30, SD .33) higher than 4.07, .37), t (33) p < .001. Across questions reiterated contact interns helped them greater appreciation work before its relevance a wider segment society. Rethinking priorities emotionally taxing some suggested structured strategies reflections understandings are imperative diverse workforce present future.
