Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis: a neglected aspect of kala-azar control programmes

摘要: Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) was studied in relation to the epidemic Bihar, India. Between 1970 and 1989, 530 individuals, 302 males 228 females, were admitted hospital of Patna Medical College with PKDL, number cases steadily rising from two 59 1989. The age patients varied four 70 years, 33% aged 11-20 years 16% 0-10 years. prevalence India also increased same period, mostly as result an disease Bihar. There no this 1958-1970, it having become rare 1950s, possibly a DDT sprayed during National Malaria Eradication Programme. In period 1977-1990, however, there 301,076 reported Bihar alone, mortality rate over 2% (compared 31,074 below 0.4% for rest India). It seems possible that, once spraying stopped, re-establishment large sandfly population infection these vectors, largely them feeding on provoked resurgence kala-azar. study emphasizes need search even young children, monitor effectively treat part control programmes.
