A Jury of Her Peers: The Impact of the First Female Jurors on Criminal Convictions

摘要: This paper uses an original data set of more than 3000 cases from 1918 to 1926 in the Central Criminal Courts London study effect Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919. Implemented 1921, this made females eligible serve on English juries, providing a novel setting for studying impact female representation jury verdicts. Results based pre-post research design imply that inclusion had little overall conviction rates but resulted large and significant increase convictions sex offenses rate differential between violent crime with versus male victims. The women also increased likelihood juries being discharged without reaching verdict all charges average time taken reach verdict. A complementary analysis which was carried over previous trial implies jurors seated sharply crimes against men.
