摘要: The cellular appendages of the planktonic centric diatom alga Cyclotella cryptica were investigated with X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. are needle-like stiff fibrils attached in pores valves. resistance to differential extractions pattern prove that these consist highly crystalline chitin. different from any other known structural polysaccharide fibrils. They ribbons up 50 nm wide composed parallel microfibrillar elements diameters range 5–30 nm. extremely stiff. lateral association subunits is lowered after alkaline extraction. Detailed results demonstrate chitin more forms broader than found so far fungal, mollusk, or arthropod systems.
