摘要: Sanctioned longline fishing for Patagonian toothfish around the Prince Edward Islands (a globally important seabird breeding site) commenced in 1996 following high levels of Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing. Independent fishery observers accompanied all but two sanctioned trips between 2000, allowing a thorough understanding impact this on seabirds. Overall, white- chinned petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis were by far most frequently killed species. However, during first year, when lines set day night, significant number albatrosses (particularly grey- headed Thalassarche chrysostoma) also killed. Birds caught almost exclusively their seasons birds adult males from Islands. Albatrosses giant sets, whereas catch rates did not differ night sets. closer to islands than white-chinned petrels. Most petrel carcasses hooked wings bodies, bills contained large numbers baits. Rates bycatch decreased from0.19 per 1000 hooks 0.034 time study. This was probably mainly due stricter implementation mitigation measures progressive movement farther away over years. We estimate that combined legal IUU past four years could have resulted 7000 17 000 mortalities had impacts populations several species 1996/97.
