摘要: Freshwater mussels from the family Unionidae are known to exhibit a high level of ecological phenotypic plasticity that is reflected in their shell shape. This variation has caused uncertainty on systematics and taxonomy group. Several naiad populations nine river basins Portugal were analyzed genetically, using two mitochondrial gene fragments (16SrRNA Cytochrome Oxidase I) morphologically, ANOVA analyses dimmensions. Molecular phylogenetic used revise infer an evolutionary hypothesis for at western-most Atlantic Iberian Peninsula. Genetic morphological data agreement supported occurrence 5 species region: Anodonta anatina, cygnea, Potomida littoralis, Unio tumidiformis delphinus. The differentiation all these species, except A. thought have taken place during isolation Peninsula formation current Tertiary. possibility cygnea being relatively recent introduction discussed. Basic morphometric measures proved be useful separate but also seem strongly affected by environmental conditions. intra-specific morphologic was partially related species’ plasticity, seems important role processes.
