Patients are Not Cars and Staff are Not Robots: Impact of Differences between Manufacturing and Clinical Operations on Process Improvement

摘要: Long recognized by industry as a key component for advancement of business, process improvement is only now being incorporated into healthcare systems. Unfortunately, despite proven success in manufacturing, these same methods are often met with resistance when proposed to the sector, largely because leaders have always considered patient care more an art than science. This attitude and attendant value autonomy especially prevalent among physicians nurses who provide direct clinical patients. Using specific examples, this paper outlines some differences between manufacturing operations, underscores unique milieu industry, proposes solutions successfully initiate operations without compromising individualized each patient.
