摘要: This preliminary investigation of the recent spate deadly flash floods and debris flows in Ladakh (India) over last decade identifies uncontrolled development hazardous locations as an important factor contributing to loss life property damage this high mountain desert. The sediments exposed channel banks on alluvial fans several streams area indicate a long history resulting from intense storms, which appear have increased frequency within decade. signposts these recurrent hazards are being ignored growing economy, is boosted by well-established tourism industry, now driving onto lands that susceptible flow hazards. In science briefing we argue increasing vulnerability should be addressed with sound disaster governance strategies proactive, rather than reactionary. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
