Hearing and Auditory-Visual Intermodal Recognition in the Chimpanzee

摘要: In contrast to the large body of studies on chimpanzee vision, few have examined function other sensory modalities in chimpanzees. 1929, Yerkes and noted a lack perception “except for sense sight”. The situation has remained largely unchanged 70 years, though there are exceptions. Vocal-auditory functions still least understood behavioral pattern chimpanzees (Mitani 1994; Nishida Tomosello Call 1996) despite many researchers having pointed out that vocal-auditory channels play particularly important roles behavior. Observations under completely natural conditions not always practicable (though desirable) evaluate cognitive abilities because difficulty excluding extraneous factors.
