Fishers’ perceptions of the European Union discards ban: perspective from south European fisheries

摘要: Abstract The estimated impact of the EU Landing Obligation was investigated, which bans discards regulated species, in South European fisheries through stakeholders’ perceptions with intention to identify implementation shortcomings and practicalities that might lead obstacles enforcement. Structured interviews were conducted 173 fishers 4 countries practicing generic (as typified by dominant fishing gear) asking a total 26 questions. Results show estimate full ban will result longer sorting times. Added limited space on board, especially more productive trawl purse seine vessels, this may practical difficulties relation compliance. Most respondents there are no realistic possibilities utilizing formerly discarded fish short term, because lack adequate infrastructure land Furthermore, possible utilization types foreseen regulation not help offset costs bringing former land. outcomes study have confirmed landing obligation, when industry cannot expect any medium long-term benefits.
