摘要: Background : Periprosthetic joint infections are severe complications of arthroplasty, difficult to manage due biofilm formation on the components. Recently, use silver nanoparticles (SNs) has emerged as a method preventing orthopaedic implants, however little is known about systematic toxicity SNs. Aim This study used rabbit model examine tissue response bone, liver and kidney prototype components with SN doped hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings. Materials methods Twelve implants (six HA, six HA coatings) were implanted into femora twelve New Zealand Rabbits. After 6 weeks, animals euthanised, their samples livers kidneys harvested prepare microscopic slides. The slides examined for presence inflammatory or toxic reactions SNs, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) determine structural changes related implantation verify retention SNs in vivo . Results SEM demonstrated that formed submicron conglomerates, which retained after weeks did not interfere osseointegration. Histologic studies bone fragments no signs acute inflammation. No reaction was observed kidneys, although some renal failure euthanasia found. found samples, fatty degeneration animals. Conclusions documented good osteointegration coatings low
