A large abrupt change in the abyssal water masses of the eastern Mediterranean

摘要: [1] In this letter we report observations showing, for the first time, occurrence of a new, major transformation in thermohaline cell eastern Mediterranean Sea. After 2 decades, during which waters Aegean origin dominated abyssal layers that basin, Adriatic Sea has returned to represent source Eastern Deep Water (EMDW). The observed characteristics such water, however, profoundly differ from those previously Ionian basin. In fact, newly formed EMDW there is saltier, warmer, and denser than before Transient (EMT). Thus, past Mediterranean, once considered steady, showed two large, abrupt, somehow opposite fluctuations. As case one, origins, climatic implications, fate second fluctuation have be clarified.
