Is Deliberation Neutral? Patterns of Attitude Change During 'The Deliberative Polls™'

摘要: Though deliberative theory has a bias toward rigorous argument and democratic social relations, it presumes that an ideal discursive process otherwise neutral stance with respect to particular ideologies cultural values. This essay provides preliminary test of assumption by examining attitude change across wide range Deliberation Polls held the globe. We analyzed 65 questionnaire statements on which Poll participants significantly changed their views variety issues. By coding each these survey items various value dimensions, we were able look for any obvious patterns change. Despite its small size exclusion showing no change, this sample showed respondents tend move more cosmopolitan, egalitarian, collectivist orientations. Further analysis strongest value-laden shifts empirical statements, public opinion such questions shifting moderately cosmopolitan beliefs.
