The carbon footprint of active sport participants

摘要: Abstract Researchers examining carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions (carbon footprint) in sport have focused on events and, to a lesser extent, teams, but provided only average or aggregate values. The author takes the perspective of active participants and considers heterogeneity individual participation behavior. Using online surveys, adult (n = 6537) 20 different sports with main residence Germany were asked report their sport-travel behavior 2015, including traveling context regular (weekly) activity, competitions/tournaments, league games, day trips, training camps/vacations. Annual footprints estimated using information about travel distances transportation means. results revealed an annual footprint 844 kg emissions, producing more than team/racket sports. Participants nature had highest emission levels. Regression analyses that environmental consciousness significantly reduced sports, not supporting existence value-action gap. Activity years, club membership, weekly exercise hours, performance level, income mainly positively associated footprint, while gender was insignificant. findings implications for policy makers managers associations clubs.
