摘要: Is the pitch of voice lowered (a) by active contraction some laryngeal muscles, (b) relaxation those muscles that raise pitch, or (c) both mechanisms? Evidence will be presented supports (c). Specifically, electromyographic recordings point to sternohyoid muscles' participation in lowering, independent their activity other speech gestures, e.g., jaw opening. Further, there is evidence a probable causal correlation between larynx height and (which accounts for sternohyoids' lowering). Vertical movements larnyx, it argued, change changing primarily vertical, not anterior‐posterior, tension vocal cords. [Research supported part National Science Foundation.]
