摘要: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses that the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 and HIV-2) belong to subgenus “primate lentiviruses” are etiologic agents of acquired syndrome (AIDS). It describes effects HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (gp120) on astrocytes potential ramifications for neuropathogenesis. The most common clinical syndrome, termed AIDS dementia complex (ADC) or HIV associated (HAD), presents as a subcortical with cognitive, motor, behavioral disturbances. pathogenesis ADC is still unknown. Because neurons not directly infected HIV-1, causes neuronal dysfunction evidently indirect. believed involve interactions among virally macrophages/microglia, astrocytes, neurons. addresses role astrocyte in development HAD. Astrocytes numerous glial cells have function maintaining homeostasis central nervous system (CNS). Astrocyte altered by infection, exposure viral proteins, soluble factors secreted macrophages. surface gp120 considered be one principal mediators toxicity. alterations connection also described this chapter.
